Can you buy Tesla Optimus Gen 2, and how much does it cost?
No public Tesla Optimus Gen 2 sales route exists as of July 23, 2026, and Tesla has not announced an MSRP. Tesla's public Optimus material explains the program and recruits engineers; it does not provide a robot configurator, reservation, deposit or delivery contract. That finding does not rule out a private arrangement that Tesla has not disclosed, but there is no public way for a home or business buyer to order one.
The price most often attached to Optimus—US$20,000 to $30,000—is Elon Musk's long-term expectation for a robot produced at scale. He gave that range at Tesla's We, Robot event in October 2024. It is not a Gen 2 list price, a preorder price or a quote for the first commercial configuration.
The most recent public-sales statement we found is conditional too. At the World Economic Forum on January 22, 2026, Musk said Tesla might sell humanoid robots to the public by the end of 2027, once the robot reached high reliability, safety and functionality. Tesla has not committed to that date or opened orders.

This Tesla Optimus Gen 2 review is source-led rather than hands-on. The useful test is whether a claim is a published specification, a demonstration, a company-reported deployment or a future target. Those categories are kept separate below.
The Tesla Optimus price record: target, cost and MSRP are different numbers
Tesla has discussed Optimus pricing in three different ways. The distinction is more useful than any single headline number.

The missing commercial details are substantial. Tesla has not published the included hand configuration, onboard compute, software entitlement, warranty, service response, spare-parts policy, training, installation, freight, tax treatment or eligible delivery markets. A factory robot may also be sold, leased or bundled with software and support; the reviewed Tesla sources do not say which model it will use.
So a serious budget should not enter US$20,000 or US$30,000 as an Optimus quote. Treat the range as a long-term price expectation and keep the deployment line blank until Tesla publishes a configuration and terms. Is Tesla Optimus available to preorder?
No public preorder, reservation or waitlist appears on the official Tesla properties reviewed on July 23, 2026. Tesla's AI and Robotics page is a program and recruitment page. Tesla Shop sells a 1:10-scale Gen 2 action figure; it is merchandise, not a robot reservation.
The practical verification rule is simple: an Optimus order should originate on an official Tesla domain and disclose the seller, configuration, payment terms and refund policy. A third-party page using Tesla branding or collecting an “Optimus deposit” is not evidence of an authorized sale. Because Tesla has not disclosed a public program, this article cannot rule out private enterprise discussions; it can say that buyers using public channels have no official route.
What is Tesla Optimus?
Optimus, originally announced as Tesla Bot, is Tesla's program to build a general-purpose bipedal humanoid. Tesla describes the intended product as autonomous and aimed at unsafe, repetitive or boring work. Its current AI page says reaching that goal requires software for balance, navigation, perception and interaction with the physical world.
That description is an end state, not a current capability sheet. Gen 2 is the hardware Tesla unveiled in December 2023. Version 2.5 is a later development revision that Tesla has named but not documented with a full specification. Gen 3 is the separate design Tesla says is intended for mass production. Treating those labels as interchangeable is the source of many bad Optimus price and specification claims.

The chronology matters because “Optimus specs” copied around the web often combine the 2021 concept, the 2022 design unit and the 2023 Gen 2 reveal as though they described one machine. They do not. What specifications has Tesla actually published for Optimus Gen 2?
Tesla's official December 2023 Gen 2 video contains specification title cards, but it mostly reports changes relative to the previous robot. It does not provide a complete product datasheet.

The video shows walking, squats, balance movements and handling an egg. It does not label those sequences autonomous, publish repeatability data or invite independent testing. The correct wording is “demonstrated in Tesla's video,” not “proven autonomous capability.”
Which widely quoted Optimus specifications belong to older robots?
Tesla has published absolute numbers for earlier concepts and designs. The mistake is carrying them into a Gen 2 table without their date and hardware boundary.

As a result, no checked Tesla source gives a final absolute Gen 2 height, total mass, battery capacity, payload or top speed. “Not published for Gen 2” is more accurate than filling those fields with numbers from another generation.

When Tesla does not identify a public robot's hardware revision, describe it only as Optimus and state that the exact revision is unknown. Do not declare every appearance “2.5,” or attach announced Gen 3 features to an older body. Exact revision matters because a hand demonstration does not automatically establish the configuration of factory units.
What can Optimus Gen 2 actually do?
The most useful capability ledger records the evidence type, not just the task. An edited Tesla video, a company claim of autonomous work and an independently observed customer deployment are different grades of evidence.

This record shows real hardware progress. It also shows why the phrase “Optimus can do X” needs a qualifier. Some actions were physical demonstrations, some involved disclosed human assistance, and the strongest factory-autonomy statement comes from Tesla's own shareholder material. None is a customer acceptance test.
Is Tesla Optimus autonomous?
Optimus has company-claimed autonomous behavior, but Tesla has not published enough data to call Gen 2 a generally autonomous worker. The Q2 2024 shareholder deck is the clearest official claim: Optimus began performing tasks autonomously in a Tesla facility, with battery handling identified. Musk later said some robots were doing simple factory tasks.
Those statements are meaningful, but narrow. Tesla does not publish task-completion rate, human interventions per hour, mean time between failures, uptime, cycle time against a human baseline or performance on a previously unseen task. It also does not identify the hardware revision behind every factory statement.
Teleoperation is not evidence that the hardware is fake; it can collect training data and demonstrate mechanics. The problem begins when a remotely assisted event is read as autonomous product performance. A buyer should therefore ask four questions of every Optimus clip: Was the behavior autonomous? Was it continuous or edited? Was the task repeated under variation? Were success and intervention rates published?
The compute story needs the same generation boundary as the physical specifications. At AI Day 2, Tesla described the 2022 design unit as using a central computer in its torso, adapting Tesla's Autopilot hardware and software, and supporting wireless and audio communications. Those are 2022 design details, not a confirmed Gen 2 or version 2.5 compute specification. Tesla's later material describes vision and neural-network work and reports autonomous battery handling, but it does not identify the exact onboard compute revision or publish a Gen 2 autonomy benchmark.

Tesla has not published an audited fleet count in the sources used here. Conflicting supply-chain estimates do not solve that gap, so this review does not turn them into a false range. “Some robots doing simple tasks,” company-reported, is the latest factory-use statement in the supplied evidence. Anything more precise needs a dated source and a definition of whether “built,” “deployed” and “doing useful work” mean the same thing.
Is Optimus in mass production?
Not on the evidence Tesla had published by July 23, 2026. Tesla's July 22 Q2 update says first-generation Optimus lines are still being installed at Fremont, with production "anticipated later this year," and the initial builds are designated for Tesla's internal Optimus Academy, not customers or factory output. The Q2 earnings call itself contained no Gen 2 content at all; Gen 3 is the model Tesla is preparing to produce. It described a Fremont line designed for one million robots per year and a later Texas line designed for long-term annual capacity of ten million.
Those are design capacities, not installed capacity, actual annual output or delivery guidance. A line can be under construction, installed, commissioned, ramping and producing saleable units at very different times. Tesla's own update classifies the locations as construction and says the lines are being installed.
The buyer-facing release gate is stricter than a factory headline. Before Optimus is commercially available, Tesla still needs to publish a customer configuration, price or quote process, order terms, supported tasks, service model and delivery schedule. A production line does not answer those questions.
How reliable have Tesla's Optimus targets been?
Forward-looking statements belong in the article, but they should be calibrated against later evidence rather than repeated as dates.

This is not a prediction that Tesla will fail. It is a rule for handling uncertain claims: state the speaker, date and condition, then wait for measurable evidence.
What can buyers do while Optimus is unavailable?
None of these alternatives is a drop-in equivalent to Tesla's intended product. This is a route-and-fit check, not a full market ranking.

Should you wait for Tesla Optimus?
Home buyers
Wait if Optimus is specifically what you want. There is no public order to join and no confirmed home configuration to evaluate. Do not pay a third party to “hold” a Tesla robot. If evaluating another home-robot offer, independently verify its current order status, warranty, remote-assistance terms, privacy terms and delivery geography.
Enterprise buyers
Do not base a 2026 deployment deadline on Optimus. Start with the task, environment, throughput and safety case, then compare vendors that will provide a quote and acceptance test. Keep Tesla on the watchlist and reopen the evaluation when it publishes a commercial program, service terms and performance data.
Developers and researchers
Optimus is not a public development platform. There is no documented SDK, developer configuration or hardware order. A purchasable research robot may be less ambitious but far more useful if it provides the interfaces, spare parts and support your project needs.
Investors and observers
Separate the scale thesis from reported execution. The Fremont and Texas capacity plans are significant, but designed capacity should not be booked as output. The evidence to watch is repeatable factory work, intervention and uptime data, saleable-unit yield, customer terms and actual deliveries.
What would change this review?
Five disclosures would materially change the buyer verdict:
- An official Tesla order or enterprise-quote route with eligible markets.
- A named customer configuration with absolute specifications and included hand, compute and software.
- Warranty, service, parts, training, privacy and remote-assistance terms.
- Task-level success, intervention, uptime and cycle-time data from continuous operation.
- Reported production and customer deliveries, clearly separated from designed factory capacity.
Until then, new videos can show engineering progress but cannot answer the commercial questions on their own.
Bottom line
Tesla Optimus Gen 2 is a development robot physically demonstrated in Tesla-produced footage, with documented features and improvements involving actuators, sensing, hands, feet, neck, walking and control. Tesla has also reported autonomous battery handling and later simple factory tasks by Optimus units, although it has not published the exact revision, scale or reliability data behind those statements.
It is not available through a public Tesla order route. Tesla has no public Optimus MSRP, reservation or delivery contract. US$20,000–$30,000 is a long-term at-scale expectation; sub-US$20,000 has been used both as an early price guess and, later, as a production-cost target conditional on more than one million units a year. Those are not interchangeable.
The best way to follow the program is to keep the generations and evidence types separate. Use the December 2023 release for Gen 2's official hardware claims, treat version 2.5 as incompletely documented, leave unrevealed Gen 3 details to Tesla's future disclosures, and judge availability only when a real configuration and sales route appear.
