The humanoid robot news from July 9–16, 2026 was dominated by money: Unitree moved to the last step before its Shanghai listing, three more makers raised a combined $1.2 billion, and Agility Robotics took its SPAC a step closer to a ticker. Away from the term sheets, 1X showed NEO's new hands, Tesla finished clearing the Fremont line that will build Optimus, and Boston Dynamics tried something unexpected with Spot. Unitree's IPO enters its final days
Unitree is finalizing underwriting, pricing and share subscriptions for its STAR Market debut, which CNBC and the South China Morning Post report could come as early as late July. China's securities regulator approved the registration on July 3, the fastest approval in the STAR Market's history. The plan filed with the exchange: sell at least 40.45 million shares, at least a 10% stake, to raise roughly RMB 4.2 billion (about $618 million), implying a valuation near RMB 42 billion (about $5.9 billion). The prospectus discloses 2025 revenue of RMB 1.69 billion and more than 5,500 humanoids shipped last year. No price or subscription date had been confirmed by July 16. When it lists, Unitree becomes the first pure-play humanoid robot company on any public market, and its pricing will become the benchmark every other maker in this section gets measured against. One week, $1.2 billion: Walden, LimX and AI² Robotics
Three raises landed in seven days. The most surprising was Walden Robotics, a Toyota Research Institute spin-out led by Russ Tedrake, which emerged from stealth on July 15 with roughly $300 million in seed funding at a $1.1 billion valuation; backers include Toyota, Nvidia, Boeing, Samsung Ventures and CoreWeave. Walden says its robots have been doing production work at a Toyota plant in North America since February, a company claim with no audited numbers behind it yet. In Shenzhen, LimX Dynamics closed a $200 million pre-IPO round on July 14 at about $2.21 billion post-money, bringing its six-month total to roughly $400 million; founder Will Zhang told CNBC that "listing is a must." And The Robot Report covered AI² Robotics' roughly $735 million in fresh capital for its wheeled AlphaBot humanoids, with state-backed funds and Moutai Group on the cap table. Reported valuations for AI² conflict, ranging from $2 billion to $3 billion depending on the outlet, so treat any single figure with caution. Agility Robotics, meanwhile, confidentially submitted its draft S-4 with the SEC on July 14, advancing the $2.5 billion Churchill Capital XI merger that would list it as AGLT with more than $620 million in expected proceeds, including a $200 million PIPE led by Foxconn. Agility says Digit has logged over 65,000 hours across nine customer facilities. The same week supplied the cautionary tale: Vicarious Surgical, a robotics SPAC of the 2021 vintage, asked shareholders to approve dissolving the company on July 21, with the board warning common stockholders are unlikely to recover anything.
1X shows NEO's hands
On July 9, 1X published a deep look at NEO's new tendon-driven hands: 25 degrees of freedom including the wrist, force-transparent quasi-direct-drive tendons, an IP68 food-safe build, and claims of ±0.2 mm positioning and 45 N fingertip force. 1X says hundreds of the hands have come off its in-house line, with capacity for 10,000 this year, and that they will ship on the first home-delivery NEOs later in 2026. Every performance number is a vendor claim demonstrated on video, tea pouring and jacket zipping included, rather than third-party testing. Tesla clears Fremont for Optimus, production still not started
Tesla's manufacturing team posted a timelapse around July 10 showing the Fremont Model S and X line torn down in 46 days, clearing the floor for the first Optimus Gen 3 production line. Tesla frames the line as the first step toward a design target of one million robots a year; Elon Musk, walking the site on July 1, pushed back on reports that production had quietly begun and said initial output will be "extremely slow," pointing to roughly 10,000 unique parts. So the confirmed facts are: the old line is gone, the new one is being installed, and no Optimus production had started as of mid-July. Boston Dynamics tests Spot as a delivery robot
Boston Dynamics published a "porch gap" concept on July 14: Spot rides in a delivery van with a conveyor payload, then walks packages the last 50 feet to the doorstep, two parcels at a time. The company estimates that covers about 60% of the packages in a typical van and says it is in pilot talks with major logistics companies, targeting 200 packages a day on routes that are driven manually first, then repeated autonomously. This is a prototype test, not a product, and there is no timeline. Robot surgeons pass a live-animal test
A UC San Diego team reported in Nature on July 8 that teleoperated humanoid robots completed live gallbladder removals on pigs, one procedure with a human surgeon assisting and one performed by two humanoids working together. It is the first use of general-purpose humanoid hardware in surgery on living subjects. The researchers are direct about the limits: the procedures were slow, with recalibration and latency problems, and this is a proof of concept, not a clinical pathway. The signal is that general-purpose humanoid platforms are starting to reach domains that previously required million-dollar specialized systems.
