You can order one today, which no other purpose-built home humanoid offers: 1X's order page takes a $200 fully refundable deposit against either a $20,000 purchase or a $499-a-month subscription. What you cannot yet do is take delivery: as of July 16, 2026, we could find no verified customer delivery of a NEO anywhere, and 1X's own materials still describe first customer shipments in the future tense.

What is NEO, and who is 1X?
NEO is the home robot 1X Technologies has been building toward for a decade. The company started in Norway in 2014 as Halodi Robotics, rebranded as 1X in 2022, and now runs from Palo Alto with manufacturing in Hayward, California and Moss, Norway. Its CEO and founder, Bernt Børnich, is an actuator engineer by background, and the company's signature technology, low-noise tendon-drive actuation, is what makes a 30 kg whisper-quiet humanoid possible. Before NEO came EVE, a wheeled humanoid deployed in factory and security work from 2022 per 1X's company history; EVE is no longer marketed, and NEO is the company's whole bet.

Reports since September 2025 have described talks to raise around $1 billion at a $10 billion-plus valuation; no close had been announced as of mid-July 2026, so treat the $10 billion as a target, not a fact.
The soft-body design philosophy
Every other credible humanoid is a machine you keep away from your children; NEO is designed to be safe to bump into. The choices compound: tendon-drive actuation instead of high-ratio gearboxes gives compliance and quiet (22 dB claimed, against the 60-plus of most industrial humanoids), the 3D-lattice polymer skeleton keeps mass at 30 kg, less than half a Figure 03, and the knit suit is literally machine-washable. The trade-off is honest physics: NEO lifts 154 lbs briefly but carries 55, and it will never pull a BMW parts cart. 1X chose the living room over the loading dock, and the entire hardware stack follows from that choice.
The hands: the July 2026 upgrade
On July 9, 2026, 1X announced a redesigned hand it says will ship "on every NEO" (official announcement): 25 degrees of freedom in total, 22 actuated in the fingers and palm plus 3 in the wrist, driven by forearm-mounted motors through tendons, with fingertip tactile sensing that detects normal force, contact location and shear, real-time slip detection, up to 45 N of fingertip flexion force, ±0.2 mm positioning, IP68 sealing and food-safe materials. Forbes described the hands as approaching human-level capability and Dezeen relayed the design detail, while WIRED added the caveat that matters: real-world performance is unverified and some demonstration clips were operator-driven. 1X says it can build about 10,000 hands in-house in 2026. Børnich's line: built "to match or surpass human capability across every dimension that matters." For pre-order holders the practical meaning is simple: the hands were the weakest part of the launch-era robot, and the version that reaches customers is meaningfully better than what the press handled in October.

Pricing has not moved since launch. The six-month minimum subscription term reported by launch coverage no longer appears on the order page, so we list it in the misinformation audit rather than the table. Read the deposit for what it is: a cheap, refundable option on an early delivery slot, not a commitment. Two fine-print points matter more than the marketing page: the refund window closes 14 days after your Order Invitation arrives, and the $20,000/$499 figures are advertised pricing that 1X's terms allow to change before you accept.

The capacity math explains the quiet: a 10,000-unit-a-year line that started in May cannot clear a 10,000-plus order book in the calendar year, before internal, B2B and testing units take their share. 1X has notably avoided promising every deposit-holder a 2026 delivery. Our read, labeled as inference: the earliest customer units land late 2026, and a meaningful share of the book slides into 2027. If you hold a deposit, your queue position matters more than any public date.
Redwood: what actually runs on the robot
Redwood, announced June 2025, is NEO's onboard brain: a 160-million-parameter vision-language model that runs entirely on the robot's embedded GPU at roughly 5 Hz, working even with spotty internet. It handles navigation, door operation, object retrieval and whole-body coordination, moving arms, hands, pelvis and gait together, and it was trained on teleoperated and autonomous episodes from 1X's EVE and NEO fleets. Its small size is a deliberate privacy and reliability argument: the robot does not need to stream your home to a datacenter to walk to the kitchen. Its limitation is equally structural: a 160M-parameter model is not going to reason its way through novel multi-step chores, which is exactly the gap Expert Mode exists to fill.
Expert Mode: how the teleoperation actually works
When NEO cannot do a task autonomously, you schedule a session, and a 1X operator connects and pilots the robot through it. The mechanics, as 1X has described them: sessions happen only in windows you choose and each one requires your explicit approval; tasks are queued through the app in what 1X has compared to a strategy-game interface; and every teleoperated session doubles as training data for the autonomy. This is the engine of the whole product thesis: 1X sells the robot before the AI is finished and uses paying customers' homes, with consent, as the training distribution. It is candid, clever and unprecedented, and it means early NEO ownership is closer to hosting a supervised apprentice than employing a butler.
The privacy ledger
The safeguards, each with its provenance. From 1X's launch briefing: operator sessions require explicit user approval, people in the home can be blurred in the operator's feed, and users define no-go zones the robot respects even under teleoperation. From 1X's published FAQ: Expert operators are US-based 1X employees, the robot's ear-ring light changes whenever a session is active, limited sensor data from autonomous requests is processed but, per 1X, not stored, sharing data for improvement is optional, and 1X says it does not profile users or sell their data. Børnich's summary claim is that the model is "more secure than hiring a cleaner."
The criticism record is just as concrete. The WSJ's Joanna Stern, reported that every household task in her session was driven by a teleoperator in a VR headset and framed early adoption as trading "the privacy of your inner sanctum" for a robot that is still learning. Marques Brownlee criticized the launch as a hype reel for a robot whose demonstrated actions were teleoperated, drawing Børnich's on-record rebuttal that the launch film's autonomous segments were genuinely autonomous. The New York Times' Hard Fork team ran a second hands-on with similar results: a failed floor pickup, balance trouble, and tasks completed under full teleoperation (episode transcript). Privacy-alarm threads dominate NEO discussion on Reddit, and outlets from CNET to TechRadar ran versions of the same warning. Every safeguard above is a company claim; none has been independently audited, because the robots are not in customers' homes yet. That is the honest state of the debate.
The autonomy roadmap: World Models and a reshuffled AI bench
1X's answer to "when does the teleoperator go away" is world models: teaching the robot to predict the visual consequences of its own actions so it can learn tasks without a human demonstrating each one. The company shipped a self-learning World Model for NEO in January 2026, and in June stood up a dedicated World Model Lab, hiring Luma AI's Samarth Sinha to lead it, with Børnich framing the thesis to Forbes as "you can't fine-tune your way to AGI." The bench turned over around the same push: Eric Jang, the VP of AI who shaped 1X's learning stack, left in January 2026, with Mohi Khansari promoted over robot learning. 1X has promised early World Model results before the end of 2026; Børnich's standing claim is a "mostly fully autonomous" robot in 2026. Score those against the delivery scoreboard above, and judge in December.
What NEO can and can't do
Three buckets, honestly sorted. Claimed autonomous, per 1X: door answering, object retrieval and handoffs, navigation, the launch film's unassisted segments, all Redwood-driven and defended by Børnich as genuine. Teleoperated by design: most complex chores today, including essentially everything in the WSJ session, laundry handling, tidying, kitchen tasks. Aspirational: the full unattended chore list, which awaits the World Model program. And 1X's own disclosed limitations deserve equal billing: cooking will initially be restricted, only the hands are waterproof (moisture can damage the body, and outdoor use is limited), and maintenance is recommended through 1X. A NEO in 2026 is an indoor apprentice with excellent hands, not a housekeeper.
The factory, and the B2B tension
The Hayward plant is 1X's answer to the question every pre-order holder should ask: can they actually build these? It is 58,000 sq ft, billed as America's first vertically integrated humanoid factory, producing motors, batteries, structures, transmissions and the knit suits in-house, rated at 10,000 NEOs a year now with a target above 100,000 a year by the end of 2027. The tension is the EQT deal: up to 10,000 humanoids across EQT's portfolio companies between 2026 and 2030, in logistics, warehousing, manufacturing and facilities. The release describes shared intent to make robots available, with each portfolio company deciding independently whether to deploy, so it is a pipeline rather than booked revenue, and still a second claimant on the same production line consumers are queued for. When you read "consumer shipments planned for 2026," remember the line is also building robots for warehouses.

Precision matters here: NEO is not the only humanoid an individual can put money on, a Unitree G1 has a literal add-to-cart button (currently backordered) and Neura takes 4NE1 Mini reservations, but it is the only purpose-built home humanoid with published US purchase and subscription pricing. Against Figure 03, the contrast is strategy, not hardware: 1X monetizes the learning phase with customers inside it; Figure keeps the learning phase in-house and sells nothing yet. Against Optimus, NEO simply has more verifiable existence: published specs, published prices, a running factory you can tour on video. Who should pre-order, and who should wait
Pre-order if the $200 is disposable, an early slot has option value to you, and you are genuinely comfortable being part of the training loop, operators, scheduled sessions, novelty failures and all. Wait if you want a robot that already does chores by itself (none exists at any price), if a remote human in your home is disqualifying no matter the safeguards, or if you would rather let the first production units absorb the early-adopter risk and read the reviews that follow. And if what you actually want is any capable humanoid to experiment with this year, a G1 costs less and is orderable today (backordered at this writing), it just will not fold your laundry either.

Four dated threads decide NEO's next chapter: the first verified customer delivery, which converts 1X's entire story from promise to product; the first production-unit reviews that follow it, which will test the autonomy, runtime and noise claims in real homes; the World Model results 1X has promised before the end of 2026; and any movement on the reported $1 billion raise, which would fund the 100,000-a-year ambition. NEO is the most honest dishonest product in robotics: honest because 1X publishes its prices, specs and even its teleoperation dependence in plain sight, and dishonest only in the sense that every home robot sold today is selling a future its software has not reached. As a piece of hardware and a company bet, it is credible, a real factory, a real order book, the best hands yet announced, and a privacy architecture that at least takes the question seriously. As a purchase, it is a $200 refundable option on being an early participant in that bet, with delivery timing 1X itself will not fully commit to.
