How much does the Unitree R1 cost, and can you actually buy one?

The Unitree R1 costs $4,900 (R1 Air) or $5,900 (standard R1) direct from Unitree's own store, both orderable today, and neither one can be programmed. The version that can, the R1 EDU, is the buried headline: Unitree's shop sells it at $10,500, in stock, $3,000 cheaper than a base G1, even though Unitree's own product page still says "Contact Sales" for it. That makes the R1 EDU Unitree's cheapest programmable humanoid, and almost nobody reports it. (The one cheaper programmable rival is smaller: Booster's 95 cm K1 at $5,999.) Since April 2026 the R1 also sells through Unitree's official AliExpress storefront, with first deliveries scheduled from June 30, 2026. We verified every price on this page against Unitree's live store data on July 22, 2026.

Air vs R1 vs EDU: the only decision that matters

The three tiers look alike and are not. The differences below are Unitree's own numbers, from the official comparison table.

Read that table bottom-up. The Air gives up six joints (no waist or neck articulation), an eye, and two months of warranty to save $1,000. The standard R1 is the better demo machine. And if the word "programmable" appears anywhere in your plans, the only tier that matters is the EDU.

The $4,900 catch: app control is not an SDK

Unitree's store page states it without ambiguity: the R1 Air and standard R1 "do not support secondary development." No SDK, no code deployment; what you get is remote control, voice and vision interaction, and the built-in motion library. Confusingly, Unitree's marketing page for the same robot advertises "fully open control interfaces for joints and sensors." Both sentences are on official Unitree pages; only one of them describes the product you receive at $4,900. When The Robot Report covered the launch, Unitree itself was candid about the gap between perception and reality: "public perception of robots — e.g., believing robots can immediately perform household chores — has a gap with the actual state of robot development."

The EDU tier is a genuinely different machine: secondary development enabled, optional Orin compute, optional dexterous hands, and first-class support in Unitree's open tooling. The R1 has its own training task in Unitree's official reinforcement-learning repo alongside the G1 and H2. At $10,500 that is a real research platform at a third of a G1 EDU U1's price, with real trade-offs covered below.

The fists problem

The most-quoted criticism from the R1's viral wave, "it cannot pick up a cup," is accurate. The Air and standard R1 ship with fixed, non-articulated fists; Unitree's own spec table lists dexterous hands as "None" on both tiers and optional only on the EDU. An R1 can run, cartwheel, box and chat. It cannot grasp anything. If manipulation is the point, either budget for an EDU with hands, or look at Unitree's own R1-D, a dual-arm data-acquisition derivative announced from $4,290 in April 2026 that trades legs for graspers (availability is still limited).

Unitree R1 specs: the ultra-lightweight pitch, reconciled

Unitree markets the R1 with one word, "ultra-lightweight," and the spec drift since launch has confused most coverage. The numbers below are the current official figures, with the launch-era variants flagged. Full record: Unitree R1 in the RoboZaps robot database.

What a delivered R1 actually does

Out of the box, per Unitree: walk, run, balance, respond to voice and vision through its onboard model, and perform built-in motions from the included controller, with no calibration required. The viral gymnastics deserve the same decoding as the G1's. The cartwheels, handstands and kung-fu routines are real hardware running trained reinforcement-learning motion policies, but The Robot Report put it plainly at launch: unlike the autonomy-first humanoids, "Unitree's R1 is remote-controlled." The stunts are operator-triggered performances, not decisions.

One 2026 development matters here. Unitree's UniStore, a motion-app store where owners tap to install packaged moves (Mantis boxing, a Michael Jackson routine, a Dragon Ball power-up), opened for the G1 in late 2025 and expanded in May 2026 across the G1, H1, B2 and Go2. The R1 is not on that list, so the robot pitched as the affordable fun machine currently cannot download the fun. Whether R1 support arrives is one of the open questions we're watching.

And an honesty note most R1 coverage skips: international sales only opened in April 2026, with deliveries scheduled from June 30, so there are as yet no substantial long-term owner reviews anywhere. Nobody outside Unitree and early Chinese buyers knows how the R1 holds up over months of falls, heat and battery cycles. Every site claiming otherwise is extrapolating from spec sheets. We'll update this page as real ownership data lands.

The practical math for a US buyer: Unitree-direct looks cheapest until freight and duties land; AliExpress pre-bakes the import cost; RoboStore's $8,990 buys domestic stock, service and no customs paperwork. Three legitimate channels, three honest totals, and which is cheapest depends on how much of the import risk you want to own. None of that math is disturbed by the FCC action: the R1 was authorized on 22 June 2026, five weeks before foreign-made robots joined the Covered List. Security and the Pentagon list: what applies to the R1

Our G1 review covers Unitree's 2025–2026 security record in depth; here is what carries over to the R1, precisely. The UniPwn disclosure (September 2025) demonstrated root takeover over Bluetooth using hardcoded keys shared across Unitree's fleet. The repo's affected list names the Go2, G1, H1 and B2, not the R1 — but the underlying research paper explicitly states the vulnerable provisioning interface is "shared across all G1, H1, and R1 units." In other words, the R1 is named by the researchers even where headline coverage missed it, and no Unitree advisory has clarified the exact model scope. The practical guidance is the same as for the G1: treat it as a managed device, keep Bluetooth off when unused, and isolate it on a filtered network. Separately, the US Department of Defense added Unitree to its Section 1260H list in June 2026 (WilmerHale's explainer) — a DoD procurement restriction, not a consumer purchase ban, but relevant if your school or lab touches defense funding.

Two boundary notes. RoboCup's eligible-platform list for the merged humanoid soccer league names the G1 and H1, not the R1, so competition teams should check eligibility before buying the cheaper robot. The R1 is the sharp end of Unitree's volume strategy: the company shipped more than 5,500 humanoid robots in 2025, which its IPO prospectus claims made it the world's largest humanoid maker by units, and its average humanoid selling price collapsed from ¥593,400 in 2023 to ¥167,600 in the first nine months of 2025 (prospectus) as the G1 and R1 took over the mix. China's regulator approved Unitree's Shanghai STAR Market IPO on July 2, 2026 (Caixin); as of July 22 it had not yet priced or begun trading. TIME named the R1 one of its Best Inventions of 2025. Who should buy an R1, and which one

Buy the R1 or R1 Air if you want the cheapest real, walking, flipping humanoid from a major maker for content, events, education showcases or sheer curiosity, and you accept that it will never run your code and cannot hold objects. Buy the R1 EDU if you want to program a full-size-adjacent humanoid on the smallest defensible budget: at $10,500 it is Unitree's cheapest SDK-enabled robot and undercuts the unprogrammable base G1 by $3,000, provided you can live without LiDAR and with an hour of battery. Look elsewhere if you need manipulation (R1-D or a G1 EDU with hands), competition eligibility (G1, or Booster K1 for smaller leagues), or any autonomous usefulness around the house, which nothing at this price delivers in 2026; our buyable-humanoids guide is the wider reality check.

What to watch next

Four dated things will change this page. First owner reviews from the initial delivery wave should surface through August, and they'll answer the durability questions no spec sheet can. UniStore either adds R1 support or the "fun robot" stays locked out of the app store. Unitree's IPO prices within weeks, with the R1's volume economics at the center of the story. And the R1-D's availability will decide whether the manipulation-first buyer at this price point stays in the Unitree family.
